Ottumwa’s Walker finishes 13th at Sugar Bowl Junior Golf Championship

NEW ORLEANS, La. — After dominating competition in the Hawkeye State, Ottumwa’s Matthew Walker battled with some of the best junior golfers in the country over the holiday break.

Walker finished 13th after fighting into contention in the boys 14-18 division of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tommy Moore Memorial Junior Golf Championship Friday. Walker, who started the final round just three shots out of the lead, fired a final round 78 to finish with a eight-over par total of 152 at the Lakewood Golf Club.

Jacob Bergeron of Slidell, Louisiana won the boys 14-18 championship, following a one-under par round to open the tournament with an even-par second round 72. Bergeron beat out Ross Bell of Madison, Mississippi by one shot with a one-under 142 total.

Walker is coming off a phenomenal sophomore season at Ottumwa that concluded this past fall by winning the 2012 Class 4A state individual championship by five shots last October in Polk City. Walker was also named the Iowa Junior PGA golfer of the year, scoring 1,507.8 points to almost double the field by outscoring Ames Dustin Atkinson by almost 700 points by the end of the year.
