Warrior softball gets one, drops two at Carthage Bash

JOPLIN, Mo. — Over 19 innings in which the Indian Hills softball came up to bat Saturday at the Carthage Bash, the Warriors produced runs in just two of the frames. That was still good enough for the Warriors to get one win in three opening games as a four-run first inning lifted IHCC to a 4-1 win over Maple Woods in the middle game of their Saturday tripleheader.

The Warriors only other run of the opening day came in the fourth inning of their opener, a 9-1 loss to Northeast Oklahoma A&M. IHCC missed a chance to have a winning opening day at the Carthage Bash, losing a 2-0 pitchers duel to Three Rivers to close out play on Saturday.

“Our starting pitching struggled in the first game, but it really came around for us in the last two contests,” Indian Hills head softball coach Jim Overturf said of the Warriors’ overall opening day of the tournament. “We got some very timely hitting in the second game to get the win. We had our chances to get those same hits (against Three Rivers), but it just didn’t happen for us.”

Those games would be the only three Indian Hills would play in Missouri over the weekend. Two games that were scheduled for Sunday, against the host school Crowder and a rematch with Northeast Oklahoma A&M, were rained out.

Kaylyn Decock helped put IHCC in front for the first time in the tournament on Saturday against Maple Woods, driving in two of the Warriors four runs in the opening inning after giving up a first-inning run. Decock, Felisha Durflinger, Hiliary Pennington and Olivia Starcevich all scored while Kendie Scheiber collected a pair of hits in the win. Former Clear Creek-Amana standout Mackenzie Haight picked up her first pitching win for the Warriors, scattering six hits over seven innings.

Schrieber gave the Warriors a second straight solid pitching start against Three Rivers, striking out nine batters over six innings. Durflinger and Pennington joined Kaitlyn Matzen and Laci Moore in collecting a hit against the Raiders, who didn’t allow IHCC to string together a scoring rally over the seven innings.

IHCC (3-13) is back in Missouri on Tuesday for a doubleheader at North Central in Trenton starting at 2 p.m. The Warriors then return home to their first games at Hellyer Field Friday in the Region XI opener against defending regional champ Iowa Western.
