BLOOMFIELD —
When it came to fly balls, there was absolutely nothing “routine” about top-ranked Davis County’s 50th consecutive victory.
Strong southerly winds on the Davis County Fairgrounds Monday evening turned every single ball hit into the air into an adventure, but the Mustangs played through the conditions to take a pair of South Central Conference baseball wins over Albia, 5-3 and 16-0.
The Mustangs complete a regular-season sweep of the Blue Demons with the victories. Davis County took a pair of tight wins at Albia on June 7 by scores of 4-1 and 8-6. The No 1-ranked Mustangs are now 28-0 on the season and have won 51 consecutive games – Davis County won its final 23 games of 2011 on the way to the Class 2A state title.
The last time the Mustangs were defeated was exactly one year ago, a June 18 loss to Durant at a tournament in Burlington.
“The kids don’t talk about the streak and they don’t talk about the rankings – at least I haven’t heard it,” said Davis County coach Todd White. “They concentrate at the task at hand and take it one game at a time.”
Davis County is now 14-0 in SCC play as it moves toward the conference title. Albia is now 5-18-1 overall – the Blue Demons’ non-conference doubleheader with Fairfield last Friday night was rained out with the first game tied at 5-5, and that’s how it’s going in the books. The Blue Demons are 3-11 in SCC play.
The strong winds Monday didn’t make Davis County’s 50th straight win look quite as easy as a lot of others.
Albia’s Hunter Hastings, the twinbill’s very first batter, lifted what looked like an easy fly ball into centerfield – but that ship must have had some sails. The wind caught the ball and it carried – and carried, and carried. Davis County centerfielder Austin Roberts couldn’t keep track of the ball and it bounced off the wall and rolled around long enough out there for Hastings to encircle the bases with a lead-off, inside-the-park home run. Three batters later, Albia’s Griffin Osing blasted a two-run homer to left field – a shot that also received some assistance from the wind – and the Blue Demons found themselves with a 3-0 lead over the top-ranked team in the state.
That was all the room Albia was going to get off Mustang ace Calvin Mathews, however. The Davis County starter would only allow two harmless singles the rest of the game, as he fanned 14 batters through six innings and did not allow a walk.
Albia starter Austin Summers kept the powerful Mustang bats mostly quiet, but Calvin Utt reached on a walk and scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.
The Mustangs tied it in the third. Josey Garmon’s RBI ground-out scored Jacob Davidson, who had singled. Then the wind worked in Davis County’s favor, as a pop fly off the bat of Wyatt Garmon looked to be drifting out of play down the first base side, but a strong gust pushed the ball back into the infield, where it landed just inches from the foul line, giving Garmon a very unorthodox RBI single.
Davis County added the go-ahead run in the fourth on an RBI single by Mathews and an insurance run in the fifth off an RBI single by Utt to make it 5-3, the final margin.
“The kids are competitors,” said White. “They’ve been there before, they don’t panic, and they adjust to whatever the situation is.”
The wind died down as the nightcap started, but the Mustang bats finally started to heat up. The Mustangs scored one run in the first, seven more in the second and eight more in the third in the 16-0 mercy-rule win. Martsching and Mathews each had two doubles and one home run, and Martsching finished with six RBI in the game. Park Mikels added a double and three RBI while Utt and Foster had two RBI each.
Martsching took the shutout win on the mound in game two, allowing four Albia hits while fanning seven batters through four innings. He worked out of trouble in the second inning, as Austin Luse, Osing and Summers all singled to load the bases with no outs, but a pitcher-to-home groundout and a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
Albia’s Hastings was tagged with the loss, as the Mustangs chased him in the second inning. Osing had a fourth-inning double for Albia.
Albia will play at Clarke on Thursday while Davis County will travel to Chariton.
