OTTUMWA —
The Indian Hills soccer teams kicked off their seasons this past weekend on the new soccer field on campus.
The men’s team began on Friday playing the first game ever at the new on-campus soccer field. The Warrior men failed to pick up an opening win, falling to the Iowa Wesleyan junior varsity 3-1.
Fans that showed up on Sunday saw a pair of incredibly tight contests. Both the IHCC men and women settled for double-overtime ties as the Warrior women opened their season with a 1-1 draw against William Penn JV while the Indian Hills men rallied from a late two-goal deficit to tie Wentworth Academy, 4-4.
“These are games where we should have gotten the win, but I’m glad we didn’t lose either game,” IHCC soccer head coach Doug Seigle said.
Terran Matteson accounted for the Warriors only goal in Friday’s match against Iowa Wesleyan JV. IHCC’s offense kicked in on Sunday as the Warriors twice overcame two-goal deficits and tied the game against Wentsworth for the final time in the final seconds of regulation as Bruno Moraes scored his second and third goals of the match in the last 15 minutes.
In the women’s game, Jessica Ghotra fed Ashley Jordan for the Warriors only goal of the game. Seigle said he was excited about his players getting to play on the new soccer field.
“We had a big crowd out there Sunday; even with the rain,” he said. “Throughout the day we probably had a couple hundred people poke their head in to see what was going on. We’re really trying to make soccer visible this year not just on campus but also in the community.”
Both the IHCC women (0-0-1) and men (0-1-1) will play on Friday and Saturday at the Dakota County tournament in Rosemount, Minn.
