OTTUMWA —
Coe College has inked a talented Bulldog to join their football family in Cedar Rapids.
Ottumwa senior Kurtis Miller has decided to continue his football career at the next level and play for head coach Steve Staker’s Kohawks. Miller, who has played on the varsity level for the Bulldogs since his sophomore season, is a two-time first-team All CIML Metro Conference selection.
Miller was a team captain and voted the team defensive MVP as a linebacker in his senior campaign. Miller’s versatility enabled him to prosper in various positions throughout his career at Ottumwa, playing running back, tight end, and linebacker while helping the Bulldogs earn a CIML Metro outright title in his junior season.
Miller joins a Kohawk team with a rich winning tradition. Last season, Coe finished second in the Iowa Conference and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs during the two seasons prior to that.
Miller joins the roster with a familiar high school teammate in his older brother, Blake, the Kohawk starting tight-end last fall as a sophomore. The Miller brothers relish the opportunity to compete for a IIAC Conference Championship this fall and are determined to bring it to the Coe Campus.
“I’m looking forward to playing for a school that competes for championships and offers an elite level of academics,” Kurtis said. “During my decisive visit, the campus felt like home.”
The younger Miller will have a fine head coach to learn from in the form of Staker, who was named the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year in 2009 and guided his Kohawks to Division III playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010. Staker has established a winning tradition at Coe College and with young talent like Miller joining the team, the future looks bright for the Kohawks.
Kurtis, who plans to study Criminal Justice at Coe, is the son of Brenda Miller of Ottumwa and Dan Miller.
