Collin Schulz and a brimful of Davis County baseball players were among the area players selected for Iowa 2012 baseball all-state teams.
The players are selected by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Schulz, the Bulldogs most reliable hitter, was named to third team all-state. He sported a .452 batting average, 60 percentage points ahead of any of his teammates.
Besides that, Schulz led the Bulldogs in several other statistical categories includes a .661 slugging percentage, .514 on-base percentage, 12 doubles and 16 stolen bases.
Davis County ace pitcher Calvin Mathews was voted team captain of the Class 2A team. Mathews is joined on the Class 2A first team by fellow teammates Josh Martsching, the Mustangs other star pitcher; and Jacob Davidson. Additionally, the Mustangs’ Josey Garmon was named to the Class 2A second team.
Mathews and Martsching played a major role in Davis County’s remarkable 42-2 season. The two star pitchers proved to be a deadly one-two pitching combination, finishing a combined 26-1.
Mathews went 13-1, fanned 187 strikeouts and boasted a 0.67 ERA. Martsching ended his season with an untarnished 13-0 record, 112 strikeouts and a 0.90 ERA.
Martsching and Mathews were no slouches at the plate, either. Martsching led Davis County with a .591 on-base percentage and ranked second with a .500 batting average and 50 RBI. He ranked second on the team in a number of other offensive categories including hits, 65; doubles, 17; slugging percentage, .762. He also tied Garmon for the team-lead in triples with 4.
Mathews led Davis County with 11 homers and 59 RBI. In addition, he led the Mustangs in doubles with 17, batted .460 and stroked 58 hits.
Martsching and Mathews also will compete in the 26th annual Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star series that runs from Aug. 2-5 at Clinton at Ashford University Field. Mustang coach Todd White will be one of their coaches during the games, which will feature four teams comprised of all start talent: Small Schools West Squad, Large Schools West Squad, Small Schools East Squad, Large Schools East Squad.
Davidson boasted the teams highest batting average of .519. He also led Davis County with 70 hits, a .652 slugging percentage and a .589 on-base percentage.
Garmon was the Mustangs second best home run hitter with eight blasts. Additionally, he ranked third on the team in RBI with 45 and batted .368. Besides that, he had the teams third best slugging percentage at .704.
In Class 3A, Centerville was represented by it’s ace pitcher Richard England, who made all-state third team. England was rock-solid on the hill this season, going 10-3, striking out 99 and boasting an ERA of 1.16 and will join Mathews and Martsching on the small school east all-star squad.
Chariton junior Austin Peterson also earned a Class 3A second team infield selection. The Chargers also featured a pair of players honored on the IHSBCA all-state academic first-team as Tyler Folkerts and Kellen Curnutte joined Pekin’s Tater Clubb for their achievements on the diamond and in the classroom.
North Mahaska pitcher Trent Roose was named to the Class 1A all-state second team. Roose sparkled on the mound, going 11-1 with a 1.09 ERA. He fanned a total of 129 batters.
Roose also shined at the plate, leading the Warhawks in a slew of offensive categories. Roose ranked first with a .524 batting average, .881 slugging percentage, .596 on-base percentage, 16 doubles and 44 hits.
Twin Cedars, who won a district title for the second straight year, had a pair of underclassmen named to the INA 1A all-state baseball team. Sophomore infielder Corey Harrell joined the Warhawks’ Roose on the second team while freshman pitcher Otis Roby was named to the third team.
