Four athletes from the Ottumwa softball team were named to the 2012 Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-State Team.
Sammy Garrett and Olivia Roark were both selected for the all-state first team and Katie Sammons and Paige Schreiner were named to the all-state second team.
Garrett, the Bulldog leadoff hitter, was Ottumwa’s most steady hitter this season. She finished the season with an awe-inspiring .510 batting average.
Garrett led the Bulldogs in a slew of offensive categories including a number of doubles, 18; slugging percentage, .776; and on-base percentage, .566; stolen bases, .434. Most remarkably of all, Garrett broke the school-record by scoring 70 runs this season.
Roark, the Bulldogs sure-handed second baseman and No. 2 hitter, batted .434 and drove in 25 RBI this season. The lightning quick Bulldog specialized in slap infield singles, but she would occasionally pepper the field with doubles and triples when the situation warranted it.
Sammons led the team in RBI, 51; and home runs, 8. Additionally, Sammons boasted the team’s second-highest batting average of 451 and ranked second in on-base percentage, .514; and slugging percentage, .744.
Schreiner, the all-star shorstop with a cannon for an arm, ranked second on the team in RBI, 46; and home runs, six. Also, she was second on the team in doubles with 12. Schreiner had a slugging percentage of .622 and .466.
The Bulldogs, however, were far from the only softball players in the area to be named to an all-state team. Several other local players earned all-state honors.
The only two other players to earn first-team honors did so in Class 1A and helped their teams battle in the Bluegrass Conference. Twin Cedars sophomore Brittney Roby earned a first-team outfield selection after leading the state a .655 batting average and .699 on-base percentage, helping guide the Sabers within a win of the state tournament in a 23-15 season.
Twin Cedars road to the regional finals included a win over Moravia, ending the prep career of ace pitcher Annie Moore. The future Evansville Ace won 16 games this past season, striking out 274 batters with a 0.73 ERA to earn a first-team Class 1A all-state selection as a pitcher.
Moore’s junior teammate Katelynn Tracy joined Roby’s teammate Brooke Dunkin on the Class 1A all-state second team. The Mohawk outfielder and the Sabers’ senior catcher were also joined by Moulton-Udell senior infielder Kadarenna Sales as one of the seven Bluegrass Conference second-team all-staters. Sigourney senior Tori Albaugh was named a Class 1A third-team all-state infielder.
In Class 4A, Oskaloosa senior pitcher Kenzie Gott earned a second team all-state selection after going 19-5 with a 1.91 ERA for the Indians and district coach of the year Jay Harms. Third-team all-state honors in 4A went to a pair of area sophomores as Gott’s sophomore teammate Kelsie Tomlin earned an outfield selection while Fairfield’s Marissa Repp was named an all-state utility player.
Class 3A’s lone second-team area selection came from Davis County senior Leah Rushman, who earned a nod as a utility player. Other local South Central Conference athletes were named to the Class 3A third team including Albia senior Tara Selvy (infield) and sophomore Sydney Weldon (outfield) along with Centerville utility senior Olivia Starcevich.
Four area athletes earned second-team all-state honors in Class 2A, including North Mahaska teammates Allie Ferguson (outfield) and Carissa McBirnie (utility). Cardinal junior Lindsay Moore was named the 2A second-team all-state catcher while Eddyville-Blakesburg/Fremont sophomore Tasha Alexander earned a second-team nod on the infield.
