AREA WRESTLING ACTION: No. 7 Albia picks up pair of wins

MORAVIA — The seventh-ranked Albia wrestling team came within one point of a three-match sweep at Moravia on Thursday night. While gaining wins over Wayne (60-9) and Moravia (51-24), the Blue Demons came up short in their bid for a second South Central Conference win as Chariton held on late for a 35-34 victory.

The Chargers also scored a win over Moravia, taking a 57-24 win despite the Mohawks winning four of six matches. Moravia also picked up a win, 24-18 over Wayne, with Dillon Conley scored a decisive pin in 52 seconds over Aaron Hornberger in the heavyweight match.

“We were able to win more matches then we lost, which we’re very happy with,” Moravia head wrestling coach Dennis Whitlow said. “We need to find those positives. If we continue to keep winning individual matches, we’ll get where we need to be by the end of the season.”

Chariton took advantage of three forfeits in four matches to score 24 straight points against the Blue Demons, opening a 35-18 lead. Albia rallied with wins in the final five matches, but only scored decisions in four matches and got an 11-2 major decision from Griffin Osing in the 160-pound finale as Connor Grgurich avoided being pinned to give Chariton the team win.

No. 7 (2A) Albia (4-3, 1-2) heads to the Pella Invitational on Saturday while Moravia (4-11) heads to English Valleys. Chariton (2-1, 1-0) is off until hosting the Charger Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 3.
