MARSHALLTOWN —
It was a familiar ending for Marshalltown at their home volleyball tournament.
Final match. Fifth place on the line. In the end, Ottumwa had just enough to knock off the tournament hosts. Just as they did last season, the Bulldogs took to win in the consolation finals in a 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 thriller Saturday to cap the Pat Apgar Varsity Volleyball Invitational.
The win capped a 3-2 day for the Bulldogs, who like last year shook off a pair of pool-play losses to finish the day at the Marshalltown Roundhouse in style. Losses to fifth-ranked (4A) Charles City (21-9, 21-7) and Iowa City West (21-10, 21-18) were followed by a final pool-play win over Indianola (21-7, 22-20) and a win in tough three-set victory over South Hardin (23-25, 25-14, 15-12) in the consolation semifinals.
“The girls played really well. We did a lot of good things,” Ottumwa head volleyball coach Jessica Carson said. “There are some good teams at this tournament. Now we are getting ready for our conference opener.”
Ottumwa had a pair of four-point runs that helped make the difference in the consolation final. The first, thanks to a pair of Marshalltown hitting errors, gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with an 11-8 edge
After Marshalltown pulled within one, Megan Black caught the Bobcats out of position with a free-ball hit to put Ottumwa ahead by two. Marshalltown would not catch up as Katie Sammons 12 kills in the match helped Ottumwa put away a 15-13 win.
Sammons led Ottumwa at the net with 35 kills while Black added three blocks defensively. Beth Overturf and Olivia Roark each had big tournament efforts for the Bulldogs with Overturf committing just two errors on 39 serves and dishing out 47 assists while Roark had a team-best five aces and 74 digs in the back row.
Ottumwa (4-2) returns home to open CIML Metro play on Tuesday as the Bulldogs host Des Moines Lincoln at Evans Middle School Gymnasium.
