Comets come back to win at M-U

MOULTON — The Cardinal Comets trailed Moulton-Udell 7-3 after five innings of baseball action Wednesday night in Moulton. The Comets scored seven runs in the sixth on five hits to go up 10-7 and then held on for the 10-9 win over the Eagles.

Ty Short opened the game with a single and came around to score an unearned run for a quick 1-0 Comet lead. Kyle Neher’s two RBI single gave M-U a 2-1 lead after one.

Cardinal used four consecutive walks to plate two runs in the second to take the lead back. The Eagles scored two in the second to retake the lead at 4-3.

M-U starting pitcher, Kyle Neher, settled in and blanked the Comets over the next three innings. Neher helped his own cause with a three run triple in the fourth to extend the Eagle lead to 7-3.

“We took advantage of lots of baserunners by getting timely hits in the early innings,” said M-U coach Brent Martsching.

Both teams were blanked in the fifth leading up to the big Cardinal inning in the sixth.

The Comets used a hit, three walks, and three wild pitches to chase the first Eagle reliever. After Conner McElderry greeted the third Eagle pitcher with an RBI double, the score was tied at seven. The next three Comets each had a hit to score three more runs. The big hit was a two RBI double by Brennon Elder but the eventual game winner came on a bad hop single off the bat of Brandon Eklofe.

“I think we did a good job of making adjustments at the plate,” said Cardinal coach Tom Hallgren. “We stayed back on the ball and laid off some pitches that we had swung at earlier.”

Martsching had this slant on the inning from the home dugout.

“In our two losses we have given up a big inning. We need to get to the point where we do a better job of stopping the bleeding.”

Tanner Chance, Comet starting pitcher, headed to the bottom of the sixth with the lead. M-U closed to within 10-8 on Zach Boettcher’s RBI double.

Cardinal started their final at bat with a single by Short.

Short stole second but would be called out for leaving second too early after the catch of Sam Schlegal’s deep fly to center. After the next Comet was retired, Chance again headed to the mound to try and close out the complete game victory. It wasn’t an easy inning but Chance overcame his high pitch count and picked up the victory. Chance only allowed six hits and had 16 strikeouts but issued eight walks.

Two of those walks led to the ninth Eagle run but Chance induced a groundout from the final hitter with the bases loaded to end the game.

“Tanner (Chance) is strong enough to go the distance and he wanted to finish,” said Hallgren. “He’s a senior and he deserves the right to finish.”

Solid pitching from Short and Dakota Showman led Cardinal to a 9-3 Southeast Iowa Superconference South victory over New London Tuesday. Short fanned eight batters while giving up three runs in five innings of work while Showman picked up the save with two perfect innings on the mound. Chance went 2-4 with two RBI against the Tigers.

The 3-2 M-U Eagles play Moravia tonight. 3-2 Cardinal will play again Friday on the road at Holy Trinity before hosting the Cardinal Classic, Saturday.
