OTTUMWA —
The Ottumwa boys basketball team was overwhelmed by eighth-ranked Ankeny 59-20 in the last game of the regular season in non-conference action Thursday.
“You could tell we were coming off Tuesday’s win,” Ottumwa coach Chris Gravett said. “It was almost like we didn’t want to be there.”
Carter Burns led the Bulldogs with nine points and knocked down Ottumwa’s two 3-pointers. Curtis Schneckloth added four points and Austin Walker chipped in three.
The Hawks poured in 32 points in the second quarter and led 45-6 at halftime.
Brian Sumner and Brandon Kuehl led Ankeny with 11 points each.
“They shoot the ball really, really well,” Gravett said.
Ottumwa (2-19, 1-11) plays Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the regional quarterfinals of the Class 4A Substate basketball tournament Monday. If the Bulldogs win, they will play at Burlington next Friday in the regional semifinals.
“We have to play with a nothing-to-lose mentality,” Gravett said. “We just have to play loose at the start of the game.”
