Some of the Ottumwa wrestling teams younger wrestlers got a chance to test their mettle against varsity competition Thursday in the Bulldogs’ two duals against Des Moines North-Hoover and Southeast Polk.
Several of Ottumwa’s most prolific wrestlers got the night off because of a Iowa High School Athletic wrestling Assocation rule that only allows wrestlers to compete on 15 dates a year. Since Ottumwa competed an additional date this season, wrestling coach Kevin Cochran opted to have many of his premier wrestlers not wrestle in the duals.
The youth-laden Bulldogs, however, still managed to knock off CIML Conference Metro rival Des Moines Hoover-North 45-32. But Ottumwa was no match for the Rams, who handily defeated the Bulldogs 75-9.
“This allows the kids to see where they are at,” Cochran said about his younger wrestlers. “It’s nice for them to get some varsity experience to understand what kind of level changes they will have to make in the future.”
Chase Wood was the only Bulldog to win both of his matches, as he scored Ottumwa’s sole victory over the Rams when he pinned Davonn Phothiboupha in 5:10 at 152. In addition, Wood outlasted North-Hoover’s Rudy Marquez in a 5-3 decision. Ottumwa’s win over North-Hoover also was bolstered by Chance Courtney (120) and Garrett Goodwin (126), who both pinned their opponents.
Ottumwa finishes the dual portion of their season with an 11-11 record. The Bulldogs next compete Saturday at Fairfield High School in the Southern Iowa Classic.
