OTTUMWA — Five former athletes and a former coach have been selected for induction into the Indian Hills Community College Athletic Hall of Fame.

The inductees include athletes from five different sports, one of whom was a two-sport star, and the coach of one of those who will be inducted.

This is the second year for the IHCC Athletic Hall of Fame with seven individuals in the inaugural class in 2012.

The following individuals make up the 2013 Indian Hills Athletic Hall of Fame class:

C.J. Bruton, Basketball (1995-97)

C.J. Bruton was the starting point guard on Indian Hills’ 1997 national championship basketball team, the first title in school history, and the first of three in a row.  Bruton was also the MVP in the national tourney in ‘97.

A native of Australia, he was a two-year starter for the Warriors and ended his career as the IHCC single-season and career assists leader. Bruton had scoring averages of 13.2 points as a freshman and 12.1 as a sophomore and he averaged 5.3 assists as a soph.

Following his graduation from Indian Hills, Bruton was selected by Vancouver in the 1997 NBA Draft, but instead opted to return to his native country where he began a storied professional career.

He has played on four championship teams there and was on the Australian Olympic basketball team in 2004 and 2008 as well as the country’s 2006 Commonwealth Games squad.  He is currently a member of the New Zealand Breakers professional team.

Tony Galbreath, Football and Basketball (1972-74)     

Tony Galbreath was a first-team All-American running back for Indian Hills in his sophomore season after sharing backfield duties with fellow IHCC Hall of Famer Rick Upchurch as a freshman.  

Galbreath led the NJCAA in rushing his sophomore campaign, averaging 134.2 yards per game with 17 TDs. As a freshman, he had averages of 5.7 yards rushing and 16.4 yards receiving.

Galbreath also played basketball as a freshman, averaging nearly 17 points a game.  After leaving the IHCC Centerville campus, he received All-Big 8 Conference honors at the University of Missouri in 1974 and captained the Tigers the following year.  

Galbreath was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the second round of the 1976 Draft and played five years with the Saints, three with the Minnesota Vikings and four with the New York Giants. He helped lead the Giants to a win in Super Bowl XXI and retired in 1987 having caught more passes than any other running back in NFL history.

Jill Hoeck, Volleyball (2004-06)

Jill Hoeck (pronounced Hoyk) played on back-to-back national tournament volleyball teams at Indian Hills, the only national tourney teams in school history.  

Her freshman season, she was named first-team All-Region and was chosen as the Outstanding Setter at the national tournament, leading the Warriors to a third-place finish. The next year Hoeck garnered another Outstanding Setter Award at the national tourney as the Warriors brought home a fifth-place finish. She was also named a first-team All-American by the NJCAA and the American Volleyball Coaches Association and was first-team All-Region for the second year in a row.  

Moving on to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Hoeck started every match during her two seasons at UNCW and left there ranked fifth in career assists and second in assists per match.

Jeff Kelley, Softball Coach (1996-2006)

Jeff Kelley, a Centerville native, led the IHCC softball program to unprecedented heights during his 11 years as head coach compiling a record of 643-106. The Warriors won 10 straight Region 11 titles and made 10 consecutive appearances in the national tournament, placing fourth, fifth and seventh twice.  

Kelley’s teams won 60 or more games six times, including a school-record 66 wins in 2001. Under Kelley, Indian Hills averaged over 58 wins a season and he had a winning percentage of .859. His final seven teams at IHCC were all named Academic All-American teams and he had 54 players selected to academic or athletic All-American teams during his tenure.

Kevin Ritz, Baseball (1984-85)  

Kevin Ritz, a graduate of Davis County High School, helped pitch Indian Hills into the Junior College World Series in 1985.

Ritz finished the season with a 7-2 record and pitched key games on the Falcons’ road to the third World Series appearance in school history. He got the victory in the first game of the sub-regionals, beating Muscatine in a complete-game effort with ten strikeouts, and he followed that up with a win against Anoka-Ramsey in the North Central District Tournament.  

Ritzí’s pro baseball career began after he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 1985 MLB Draft. He was in the big leagues with the Tigers from 1989-92 before going to the Colorado Rockies in the 1992 expansion draft.  

Ritz was a member of the Rockies’ staff for five seasons and was a member of the first Colorado team to reach the playoffs. His best season with the Rockies was 1996 when he won 17 games and pitched 213 innings.

Karen (Smith) Malloy, Softball (1997-99)

Karen (Smith) Malloy was a two-time softball All-American and is in the top five in seven offensive categories for Indian Hills.  

An outfielder, she was first-team All-Region and first-team All-American for IHCC teams that were a combined 129-12 and made two national tournament appearances. She was also an Academic All-American two years.  

Malloy is among the career leaders at Indian Hills in at-bats, triples, doubles, runs and total bases. And she is in the top five in triples and doubles in a single season.  

Malloy went from IHCC to Simpson College where she helped lead the Storm to a national tournament berth her junior season and was first-team All-Conference, All-Region and All-American the following year.
