DES MOINES —
The short-handed Ottumwa boys basketball team simply didn’t have enough firepower to defeat a talented Des Moines Roosevelt team, as the short-handed Bulldogs fell to the Roughriders 53-32 Tuesday.
The Bulldogs lost their starting point guard for the rest of game in the first quarter when Andrew Altfillisch came down wrong on his right ankle when he drove the left baseline and came down on his defender. Ottumwa was already minus one starter before Altfillisch’s injury, as Kyle Keck was sidelined with the flu. The effect the shortage of players had on Ottumwa was glaringly obvious as the Bulldogs failed to score a point in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Roughriders carried a 13-0 lead into the second quarter.
“Roosevelt really got up into us early on,” coach Chris Gravett said, “really pushed us off of everything we wanted to do.”
The Bulldogs found their rhythm in the second quarter with a 16-point effort, but they still found themselves trailing Roosevelt 29-16 at the half.
Gravett said he felt his team did much better job on both ends of the floor in the second half.
“We got to the free-throw line in the second half because we were more aggressive,” he said.
Carter Burns led Ottumwa with 11 points, Austin Walker added seven and Brok Hopwood chipped in six.
Ottumwa (1-8, 1-3) plays West Des Moines Valley next Tuesday at Evans Middle School.
