KEOKUK —
The Ottumwa girls basketball team struggled to put points on the board in its 55-35 loss to Keokuk Friday.
The Bulldogs managed to whittle a 10-point halftime deficit to four in the third quarter, but the Chiefs broke the game open with a 12-0 run, which was keyed by eight points, included two 3-pointers, from Paige Kayvan who hadn’t scored a a single point in the first half. Ottumwa never regained its footing after the run as Keokuk continued to build on its lead.
Olivia Roark supplied Ottumwa with much of its offense in the first half, scoring eight, including two 3-pointers, of Ottumwa’s 15 points. Roark’s efforts helped Ottumwa shave the Chief’s lead down to 17-13 at one point, but Keokuk ended the half on an 8-2 run and led 25-15 year at halftime.
Coach Kevin Patterson said missed shots inside the lane really hurt his team throughout.
“If we make our shots in the lane, it would have been a totally different game,” he said.
Sydney Strunk, one of Ottumwa’s best defenders, had one of her strongest performances offensively, as she finished with eight points. As a team, Ottumwa had one of their most balanced games on offense with eight of the Bulldogs getting on the scoreboard. Still, the girls just weren’t able to score enough points.
“Thirty-five isn’t enough points, we have to get to the 40s at least,” Patterson said.
Ottumwa (2-8) plays Tuesday at Des Moines Roosevelt in CIML Metro Conference action.
