CENTERVILLE —
When the top-ranked team in the state comes to town today, they’ll need their pitching to be at its best.
Because a red-hot team at the plate will be waiting at Legion Memorial Field.
The Ottumwa Bulldogs picked up their third straight win in just two days with another productive night of offense. Seth Griffiths had three hits, including an RBI double, while Michael Collins added three hits and two RBI as Ottumwa scored in each of their first three innings in an 8-2 road win over Centerville Wednesday at Pat Daugherty Field.
“We really wanted to come out with a goal of getting at least one run every inning,” Ottumwa head baseball coach Mike Egbert said. “We did a good job moving the ball around with our hits.”
The Bulldogs used big innings to score two dramatic walk-off wins over Ames at Legion Field on Monday, winning twice by one while collecting 25 runs on 24 hits. Ottumwa added eight more runs and 11 more hits to that two-day tally against the Big Reds, chasing Centerville starter Daniel Cisler after just four innings before using a three-run fifth inning to open up a 7-1 lead.
“The guys are playing hard, they’re buying in and they’re really fighting,” Egbert said. “They come up just as hungry at the plate anytime whether it’s a 1-0 game or a 10-0 game.”
Richard England shined again for Centerville, stepping up at the plate to drive to collect two hits including a double while scoring twice. Tony Armington added an RBI triple for the Big Reds, who suffered their first loss of the season after three straight wins.
Ottumwa (4-2) will face their second test against a highly ranked Class 4A opponent in their second week of the season. The Bulldogs face No. 1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy tonight at Legion Field exactly one week after suffering their only two losses of the season to No. 2 West Des Moines Valley.
“We’re not going to treat this one any different then any other game,” Egbert said. “We knew Valley and Kennedy would both be very good. We didn’t know they’d by one and two, but we know we’ll get another tough test from Kennedy.”
Centerville (3-1) is back in action on the road tonight. The Big Reds head to Washington for a doubleheader rematch of last year’s Class 3A substate final.
