OTTUMWA —
Five athletes and four teams from Indian Hills Community College have been recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their academic performance during the 2011-12 year.
Of the five individuals who received academic honors, Cortney Wood (Alburnett) from the IHCC softball team was awarded the Superior Academic Achievement Award.
Two members of the women’s soccer team — Kaylie Tuttle (Mystic) and Caitlin York (Muscatine) — along with Danny Schieffer (Columbus Junction) from the men’s cross country team and men’s basketball player Tucker Henderson (Drakesville) were all given the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award.
The IHCC baseball, golf, softball and women’s cross country squads were all named Academic Teams of the Year in their respective sports, awarded to teams with an overall team grade point average above 3.0. The softball team had the highest GPA at 3.43, which ranked them 12th in the country. The golf (3.24) and women’s cross country (3.21) teams were both 11th in the nation. The baseball team (3.12) was 21st.
“The student-athlete award winners and All-Academic Teams competed hard and had good years within their respective sports,” said Mike Hagen, IHCC Athletic Director. “But, more importantly, they were successful in the classroom. It takes hard work, good time-management skills and dedication to achieve these results. This recognition should be a good example to all our student-athletes.”
