CENTRAILIA, Ill. —
A slow start didn’t stop the Indian Hills volleyball team in their postseason opener on Friday. The Warriors bounced back twice against Kaskaskia in the District D Super Regional Tournament, rallying from an opening-set loss and 2-1 deficit to win a tough five-set battle 13-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-13, 15-8 over the Blue Angels.
Cristaine Vosconcoles and Carla Novaes paced the Warriors offensive with 16 kills each. Peyton Crosser went 36-37 on hit attempts and Ailime deFreitas catalyzed Indian Hills offensively with 67 assists.
Jessi Black shepherded the Warrior defense with a team-high 28 digs and Emily Eswonia added 20 digs. Vosconcoles and deFreitas combined for a perfect 40-40 serving effort with and Vosconcoles nailing a pair of aces for the Warriors.
“We started off very slow, but we were able to turn that around,” coach Lyndsey Lyon said. “Defensively, we were very strong, we just started off a little slow offensively. Peyton Crosser, Vosconcoles, and Carla Novaes stepped up after having not such a hot first set. ...They kind of took off in the second set. ”
Indian Hills (29-9) will take on fourth ranked Iowa Western today at Centralia in their second match of the tournament. A win will move IHCC into the super-regional final while a loss forced the Warriors to play later today in an elimination match.
