D.C.’s Birchmier takes home shot put title at state indoor

CEDAR FALLS — Kate Birchmier finished her freshman season placing eighth in the shot put in Class 2A at the State Track and Field Meet.

If the finish to her most recent indoor season is any indication, expect even bigger and better things from the Mustang sophomore this spring.

Birchmier took home the shot put crown Monday at the A.D. Dickinson State Indoor Relays, culminating the indoor portion of the track and field season with a winning toss of 41-7. The toss was good enough to beat out Waterloo West junior Blaire Thomas by eight inches Monday afternoon at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

The Mustangs were one of four area schools to have competitors in the field of the girls indoor state meet. Fellow Davis County sophomore Hayleigh Sharp had the only other top-10 finish for Josh Husted’s squad with a sixth-place leap of 16-2 in the long jump while senior Chandra Smith had the top run on the track for the Mustangs with a 14th-place finish in the 3,000 meters in a time of 12:17.58.

Defending 200 meter state champ Sydney Howard closed out her indoor season successfully on Monday. The Fairfield sprinter scored a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash in a time of 8.11 seconds.

It was an overall balanced day at the state indoor meet for the Trojan girls. Marissa Repp gave Fairfield a top-five showing in the field by finishing third in the high jump with a leap of five feet while the Trojans’ 4x800 relay team finished ninth in a time of 10:35:89.

Oskaloosa had one top-10 finish Monday as Taylor Richardson finished ninth in the long jump with a leap of 15-10.5. The Indians’ top runner was Bailey Blythe, who finished 16th in the 3,000 meters in a time of 12:25.77.

MSAE had just two runners in the girls state indoor meet on Monday. Phoebe Carter finished 65th in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.17 seconds while Ami Saine’s run of 36.04 was good enough for 83rd in the 200 dash.

No team scores are kept for the state indoor meet. The boys portion of the Dickinson Relays will be held today in Cedar Falls.
