AREA PREP FOOTBALL ACTION: Cardinal shuts out Van Buren, 28-0

OTTUMWA — Dakota Showman ran for two scores and connected with receivers Cody Carter and Cole Campbell for two more scores as the Cardinal football team took a 28-0 victory over Van Buren to open the season in non-district play on Friday.

Showman burst into the end zone from 69 yards to give the Comets their first score, and Cardinal never looked back. Scoring passes were from 35 yards to Carter and 66 yards out to Campbell, both coming in the third quarter.

“I was real impressed by our guys tonight,” said Cardinal coach Adam Hadenfeldt. “We played great team football. We had a bunch of guys step up and make plays.”

Showman finished with 129 yards rushing and 153 through the air, with Campbell catching two of those for 104 yards.

Cardinal (1-0) will host Danville next Friday.

Big fourth quarter lifts E-B

EDDYVILLE —  The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont football team trailed 15-14 after three quarters but scored 22 fourth-quarter points to take a 36-15 win over Pleasantville in non-district football action to open the season on Friday.

Cory Archer nabbed a pair of touchdown passes from Trevor Swartz for E-B-F while Dalton Brown recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Jeran Glosser and Dillon Pigsley each had fourth-quarter touchdown runs. Glosser finished with 57 of E-B-F’s 130 rushing yards.

Swartz passed for 187 yards, with Pigsley grabbing five catches for 97 yards.

E-B-F (1-0) will host Lynnville-Sully next week.

Oskaloosa falls to Indianola

INDIANOLA —  The Oskaloosa football team opened the regular season with a 35-25 loss to Indianola on Friday.

With Osky up 25-21 after three quarters, Indianola punched in a pair of scores in the fourth. Matt Mitchell scored two touchdowns for Indianola while Aaron Johnson rushed for 148 yards.

Osky’s Tyce Sarver scored a pair of touchdowns while Jesse Van Dalen rushed for one touchdown and tossed another to Spencer Medlin.

Osky (0-1) will host Grinnell next Friday.

Panthers rout New London, 88-6

PEKIN — The Pekin football squad got their season off to a fantastic start, scoring 41 points in the very first quarter. The Panthers cruised to a season-opening victory over New London in impressive fashion, 88-6, Friday night at Tom Stone Field.

Quentin Garrels led the charge for the Panthers, rushing for 200 yards on 14 carries with almost half going for touchdowns. The senior found the end zone six times in the victory.

Pekin (1-0) heads on the road for the ‘Skunk River’ rivalry at Sigourney-Keota next Friday night.
