Savages win big over Tri-County

PEKIN — Sigourney and Tri-County had split their two regular season baseball games this summer. Tuesday night the rubber game was more important than for just bragging rights. Sigourney (12-15) won the Class 1A, District 9 second-round game 16-4 in six innings.

The win moves the Savages to Thursday night’s game against Pekin-at Pekin. Pekin advanced with a 5-0 blanking of Keota.

Sigourney took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A lead off walk was followed by consecutive hits from Jackson Davis (2B) and Kyle Ferree. Ferree’s hit was the first of three and his RBI was the first of four. Tri-County then pulled a 1-2-3 double play to limit the damage to the single run.

“It was big for our guys to only give up one,” said Tri-County coach Scott Edmundson.

The Savages added three runs in the second. The Swearingen brothers each reached base to start the rally — Shane singled and Seth walked. Davis’ double (his second in as many innings) scored the first run. Ferree then followed with his two out double to drive in the other two.

Tri-County scored a run in the bottom of the second on a single by Spencer Steinke.

Each team added a run in the third. Winning pitcher, Brandon Stuhr, led off the Savage third with a double. The run scored on a Trojan error. Tri-County scored their run on a Kadon Foubert RBI.

At the end of three, Sigourney led 5-2, but Tri-County had already left five runners on base.

“That has been a problem for us all season,” said Edmundson. “We haven’t been consistent enough at the plate to bunch hits together and have a big inning.”

Sigourney put the game away in the fourth with their seven-run outburst. The first eight hitters reached base, forcing the Trojan pitching change. The Swearingens again both reached base to start the inning. Davis would have a deep sacrifice fly for an RBI and Stuhr drew a bases loaded walk. The big hit was Colby Kerkove’s two RBI single. Shane Swearingen added a fly to center deep enough to score the seventh run.

After retiring Sigourney in the fifth, Tri-County scored twice. Nick Watts, Jake Brumbaugh, and Tyler Lally had consecutive singles to start the inning. A Sigourney error allowed the first run to score and Lally’s hit plated the second.

“It was a little disappointing to not close it out in the fifth,” said Sigourney coach Lee Crawford. “We told our kids we wanted to stay full throttle and not let up, so it was good to see us score some more in the sixth.”

The Savages went up 16-4 with four runs in the inning. Freshman-to-be Peyton Crawford opened with a solo home run to center. Cole Streigle would later add a two-RBI single and Ferree finished off his three hit night with his fourth RBI.

“The guys in front of me do a great job of getting on base,” said Ferree. “I’m hitting in a different spot this year and it gives me chances to drive in runs.”

Stuhr surrendered a two-out hit in the sixth but then closed out his complete game win.

“Brandon did a good job tonight and by going the distance that will help our pitching in the tournament,” added Crawford.
