DES MOINES —
The sixth-ranked Ottumwa softball team suffered two tough CIML Metro losses at seventh-ranked Des Moines East Tuesday.
Despite getting seven hits off the Scarlets’ ace pitcher Riley Fisher, the Bulldogs lost game one 9-4 and East went on to win the nightcap, 4-1.
Game one didn’t go well for the Bulldogs starting pitcher Mandi Moore. She gave up six runs on 10 hits in three innings before being replaced by Sarah Wilson. Wilson gave up three runs on four hits in three innings.
Paige Schreiner went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. The Bulldogs had seven hits overall.
Ottumwa coach Frank Huston said when his team gets that many hits and that many runs against Fisher, they need to win.
Ottumwa lead-off hitter Sammy Garrett had a great game offensively in game two, going 3-for-4 and scoring the Bulldogs only run, but the Scarlets were still able to pick up the victory.
“We stranded a lot of people [on base],” Huston said.
Starting Bulldog pitcher Brittni Vogt allowed four runs, three of them earned; on 10 hits in a losing effort.
The Bulldogs had swept the Scarlets in action at Huston Field in Ottumwa earlier this season, as East was unbeaten and the top-ranked team in the state at the time. Both teams went into Tuesday’s contest tied atop the CIML Metro with two losses. The sweep at East Tuesday puts the Scarlets two games up on Ottumwa in the conference race.
“East is starting to get healthy again and showing why they were the No. 1 rated team for most of the season,” Huston said.
The Bulldogs (24-6, 12-4) hosts Des Moines Roosevelt Thursday at Huston Field.
