INDIANOLA —
The Ottumwa girls basketball team couldn’t overcome an ice-cold first quarter Friday, as the Bulldogs fell behind 18-0 on the way to a 47-27 road loss to seventh-ranked (4A) Indianola.
“We were trying to play right into the pressure they were putting on us,” said Ottumwa coach Kevin Patterson. “Handling pressure has hurt us all season, and as a coach, I have to get this team ready for that. We simply need to learn where the ball should go at what time.”
After the rough start, the Bulldogs went on a 13-2 run and brought themselves back into the game, trailing just 20-13, but Indianola responded by scoring 18 of the next 21 points to put the contest back out of reach.
“I like our attitude,” said Patterson. “We didn’t quit, we battled back and cut the lead to 20-13, but then they went on a run to end the half.”
Olivia Roark led the Bulldogs with seven points while Sydney Strunk, Megan Black and Rachel Zingg each added five points for Ottumwa. Indianola’s Rachel Kaale led all scorers with 20 points.
“We played pretty good defense,” said Patterson. “When you hold a ranked team to 47 points, you should be a little closer to them. Our execution on offense just needs to improve.”
No. 7 Indianola is now 6-2 overall. The Bulldogs drop to 2-6 and will play host to eighth-ranked Des Moines East on Tuesday.
