OTTUMWA —
The top-ranked Indian Hills golf team holds a one-stroke lead over host Odessa after two rounds of play at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Preview Tournament.
The Warriors carded a team round of 574, one better than Odessa’s 575. New Mexico Community College was two strokes off the lead at 576 as play concluded on day one.
The teams will play 18 more holes today.
“In the first round, I thought we played pretty average,” said IHCC coach Mike Hagen. “It’s a tough course, and we struggled on the greens a little. I thought we could have putted a little better.”
IHCC’s Jon Paul Blampied was even with New Mexico’s Jordan McColl as the individual leader. Both golfers carded 137 after 36 holes.
“Jon Paul shot a 67 in the first round — five under par — to keep us in it. Then in the second round we really stepped it up as a team. Overall, it was a really good effort.”
IHCC’s Steven Ihm was tied for 10th overall at 144. Other Warriors competing include Cameron Munro (34th, 149), Dan Dawson (41st, 150) and Monty Luck (150). IHCC’s Zach Steffen, playing as an individual, was 34th with a score of 149 in the dry Western Texas heat.
“We really battled hard in the heat in the second round,” said Hagen. “It’s great to have the lead over Odessa, who plays this course in this heat all the time. We’ll just go out tomorrow and see what we can do.”
