DES MOINES —
The streaky Ottumwa baseball squad turned their fortunes around Thursday in their road test in CIML Metro Conference play.
The Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak, which came after a five-game run of wins, by sweeping Des Moines North. Karsten VanVelsor earned his first save and win on the mound as Ottumwa pounded out 28 hits over 12 innings in a 4-1 opening-game win and 12-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap.
VanVelsor was very effective in just his second and third pitching appearances of the season. The Bulldog junior relieved Tyler Bramschreiber, who earned his first win on the hill in game one, and struck out three batters including consecutive strikeouts of potential tying runs Kalob and Matt Russell in the sixth.
Tyler Johns had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI for the Bulldogs in the opening game. Mitch Stuchel added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
VanVelsor continued to pitch well after earning his first save, starting and finishing game two on the hill tossing a four-hit shutout with five more strikeouts. The Bulldog bats got hotter at the tale end of the doubleheader with Michael Collins, Lucas McIntosh and Collin Schulz all collecting a double, three hits, a combined seven RBI and three runs scored.
Ottumwa (8-5, 2-2) returns home to close out a busy week with a non-conference doubleheader against Urbandale. First pitch for game one at Legion Memorial Field is set for 5:30 p.m.
