The Ottumwa girls basketball team used a combination of slick passes and pesky defense to trounce Des Moines North, 69-14, in CIML Metro play Friday night.
The Bulldogs controlled the game’s momentum from the opening tip until the final buzzer. Alexis Winn and Hayli Beeson spearheaded Ottumwa’s offense with 10 points each and Megan Black posted eight points. In addition, Devin Leffler, Sydney Strunk and Olivia Roark all finished with seven points and Jami Nickerson scored six points off the bench thanks to a burst of offense in the fourth quarter. Roark also came away with a team-high five steals and Carissa Hite led the team with six rebounds.
“We had a lot of good ball movement tonight,” coach Kevin Patterson said. “I was impressed with how we were getting the ball around the perimeter and getting the ball inside. It was a well balanced scoring effort.”
Winn was the catalyst for much of Ottumwa’s initial offense. After scoring the first bucket of the game off a nice feed from Strunk, Winn swished a short jumper from the right baseline. Black pushed the ball down court and made it deep into the lane before pushing a one hand pass to an open Strunk who buried a jumper from the left baseline, which extended Ottumwa’s lead to 8-0. Meanwhile, the Polar Bears, partly because of the Bulldogs defensive pressure, could get into any rhythm offensively because of turnover problems. Ottumwa continued to stretch its lead and led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Hayli Beeson buried one of her two 3-pointers to start the second quarter after pulling down an offensive rebound earlier in the possession.
“Once you get that first shot,” Beeson said, “it helps a lot to get in that zone because once you miss a few you get kind of down on yourself.”
Soon after she checked into the game, Averi Cash came up with a steal and sped down the court for a layup. Moments later, Winn split the defense and made a strong drive to her right and finished with a layup. By halftime, the Bulldogs lead had ballooned to 43-6.
Strunk penetrated down the left baseline and skipped a pass across the lane to a cutting Black who banked it off the glass while drawing contact from a defender early in the third quarter. Defensively, Ottumwa continued to badger that Polar Bears, as the Bulldogs came up with steals almost every time North had the ball.
Beeson nailed her second 3-pointer of the game in the fourth and Nickerson scored six quick points in the final minute before final buzzer sounded.
Ottumwa (4-13, 3-7) plays at Mount Pleasant Monday in a non-conference game.
