OTTUMWA —
The Ottumwa volleyball team swept Des Moines East 3-0 (25-2, 25-23, 25-13) in Ottumwa’s last home match of the regular season at Evans Middle School.
For seniors Katie Sammons, Ashlyn Nordyke, Beth Overturf, Kelsey Guyette and Olivia Roark, it was a great way to go out.
“It hasn’t hit me yet,” Roark said when asked how she felt about playing in her last home match, “But I think it will eventually.”
The girls came out of the chute with an intensity that the Scarlets had no answer for. Sammons owned the net in the first game, overwhelming East with powerful kill after a powerful kill. The Bulldog middle hitter shepherded her team to a 4-1 lead with consecutive spikes early in the first game. Moments later, a double block by Sammons and freshman Ellie Hammack upped Ottumwa’s lead to 6-1. Junior Megan Cobler got in on the action with a kill that extended the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-2. As the game progressed, Ottumwa continued to build its lead.
Consecutive kills by sophomore Hope Bitner and Sammons upped Ottumwa’s lead to 15-2. The Bulldogs went on to score 10 more points — the girl’s loyal high school fan base stood and clapped continuously through the last four points — to pick up the win.
“We really made a statement coming out like that at the very beginning,” coach Jessica Carson said. “Today, that first game we put everything together ... and it was a team effort.”
“When we’re happy and pumped up, we play really well together,” senior Kelsey Guyette added.
The Scarlets put a scare in Ottumwa in the second game before the Bulldogs finally prevailed. East’s Desirae Dupree led the Scarlets’ resurgence with an ace and a kill that helped her team take a 8-7 lead early on. East’s momentum reached a crescendo after a pair of kills and a tip by Dupree gave the Scarlets a 13-9 lead.
An ace by junior Megan Black and a kill by Sammons narrowed the gap to 15-14. The Bulldogs continued to sharpen their play and eventually overtook East’s lead. The Bulldogs upped their lead to 23-19 after Black scored on a kill.
Yet, the Scarlets, like a song that gets stuck in your head, wouldn’t go away, whittling Ottumwa’s lead down to 24-23. But the girls were able to score the final point and win the game.
Roark said her team expected a little too much after winning by so much in the first game. Ottumwa jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third game. Later in the game, Bitner scored on a powerful kill that was made possible by a diving hustle play by junior Megan Cobler that kept play going earlier in the volley. Two consecutive kills by Sammons gave Ottumwa a 25-13 victory in the third game.
Sammons had a team-high 17 kills and Roark had 14 digs. Sophomore Chloe Davis finished with 19 assists ands senior setter Beth Overturf had 12 assists. Davis also went 19-19 on serves and Black had 7 of Ottumwa’s 11 aces.
Ottumwa (14-13) plays at Oskaloosa Saturday.
