Balanced Regals shut out Cardinal

ELDON — Iowa City Regina won their 33rd straight game with a balanced offense and physical defense. The Regals downed Cardinal 58-0 in Class 1A, District 6 football action Friday night in Eldon.

An underdog entering a game looks to load up and try and take something away from the favorites. When that strategy doesn’t work, it makes for a long night.

“We tried to take away the run and give their quarterback some different looks,” said Cardinal coach Adam Hadenfeld. “We didn’t have much luck with that, and they threw the ball well.”

The Comets received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt from their own end zone. The snap was bobbled and the punter was tackled at the eight. Regina scored on their first plaly from scrimmage on an eight-yard pass from quarterback Mark Ward to Mike Donovan.

The Regina kicking game was a factor throughout the game. Nearly every kickoff went into the end zone and resulted in a touchback. Two different kickers went seven-for-seven on extra points.

Cardinal went three-and-out and a short punt gave the visitors the ball at the Comet 30. Nathan Yeager picked off the Ward pass and returned it 18 yards to the Comet 45. The Comets again went three-and-out and Regina went 80 yards on eight plays for a 14-0 lead.

The visitors upped the lead to 16-0 as another high snap forced the Comet punter to step on the end line for a safety.

A 38-yard return of the free kick set the Regals up at the Comet 30. Ward threw his second touchdown pass with just under a minute to play in the opening quarter for a 23-0 lead.

The Comets answered with their best drive of the game. Cardinal ran off eight plays but couldn’t find the end zone.

Ward would have a hand in a third touchdown with a 19-yard touchdown run. He earlier extended the drive with a 35-yard run on fourth down.

Regina’s defense harrassed Comet quarterback, Dakota Showman, all night. They recorded four sacks in the first half alone.

Back-up quarterback Drew Cook, the son of Regina coach Marv Cook, hooked up on a 31 yard pass to Matt Streb. With just seconds left in the half, Donovan had his second touchdown run for the 44-0 halftime lead.

With the running clock in play for the final half, each team was limited to four possessions. Regina would score on two of theirs.

“I feel like we left it all on the field,” said Hadenfeld. “We competed in the second half when we could have just packed it in”.

A 66-yard run by Jake Brinkman, his second touchdown, made the score 50-0 Regals. With just under a minute to play, reserve running back, Justin Hunter, closed out the scoring.

“The last time we came off a bad loss we really came to work the next week,” said Hadenfeld. “We did some good things tonight and we told the kids that everything we want to do is still ahead of us.”

Cardinal falls to 3-2 overall, 0-2 in district play with the loss. They will travel to Wilton next Friday for another district match-up.
