Bulldog spikers compete in Metro Seven Tourney

INDIANOLA — The Ottumwa volleyball team played their final weekend tournament of the season against very familiar competition. The Bulldogs took on three conference foes in the Metro Seven Tournament on Saturday, splitting a pair of pool-play matchups with Des Moines Hoover and Des Moines Roosevelt with a 21-8, 21-9 win over Hoover and a 22-20, 21-17 loss to Roosevelt.

In bracket play, Ottumwa lost in two games to Indianola. The Indians, who would go on to win the conference tournament title, swept the Bulldogs 25-15 and 25-21.

“The girls played very well this weekend even though we only got one win in three matches,” Ottumwa head volleyball coach Jessica Carson said. “We just couldn’t quite get over that hump to get over the top in the end, but we were competitive and did what we could to put ourselves in position to win any of those games.”

Senior Katie Sammons had a big day at the net for the Bulldogs, leading Ottumwa with four blocks and 30 kills on 47-50 hitting. Beth Overturf led Ottumwa five aces while Ellie Hammack was a perfect 16-16 serving. Chloe Davis dished out a team-high 28 assists in the tournament while Olivia Roark collected 42 of the Bulldogs’ 107 digs in the tournament.

The Bulldogs (16-18) wrap up CIML Metro conference and regular season play on Tuesday night at Des Moines Roosevelt, just 48 hours after battling the Roughriders in match decided by six total points. With a chance to share second place in the CIML Metro with Roosevelt and Lincoln, Carson saw plenty of positives from Saturday’s tournament competition.

“It was nice to see Roosevelt ahead of time. The match that means the most is on Tuesday, but we got a good idea of what we have to do as a team to beat them,” Carson said. “It should be a very competitive match. As long as we play to our strengths, we should be alright. We want to finish as high in the conference as we can.”

After facing the Roughriders, Ottumwa will have nine days off before opening postseason play in Class 5A on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Burlington. The Bulldogs need just two wins to qualify for the first ever 5A state volleyball tournament.

“It’s pretty unusual to have that much time off to prepare for your first postseason match,” Carson said. “This year, just needing two wins to get to state is something we need to take advantage of.”
