OTTUMWA —
A second player who was a junior college basketball All-American last year is transferring to Indian Hills Community College to play his sophomore season.
Warriors’ coach Barret Peery said Karrington Ward, a first-team All-American at Kankakee Community College after a freshman campaign in which he averaged over 19 points a game, has signed to attend Indian Hills.
“Karrington had a great freshman season,” Peery said. “His experience will be very valuable to us. I love the fact he wanted to be here at Indian Hills.”
Ward, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound wing from Lockport, Ill., was the 12th-leading scorer in the nation in Division I last year with a 19.6 average. He scored in double figures in all but one game in leading Kankakee to a 26-6 record, tallying 20 or more points 18 times.
The newest member of IHCC’s recruiting class also averaged 9.1 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. He shot 49 percent from the field, 37 percent on 3s and 73 percent at the foul line.
“Karrington will be a great addition to our basketball family,” stated Peery. “Not only is he a great athlete that can really play basketball, but he is an excellent student.
“The biggest reason that Karrington came here was because he wanted to win a national championship and he knew heíd have a chance to do that at Indian Hills.”
Indian Hills earlier added Ronald Ross, an NJCAA honorable mention All-American as a freshman at Vincennes, to the roster. Ross and Ward, along with returning sophomore Dustin Hogue, give Peery three outstanding players that can all play the big guard or small forward spots.
