RUNNELLS —
The Ottumwa golf team — and standout golfer Matt Walker — are on a roll.
The Bulldogs took first place in their third straight invitational and fourth straight event when they claimed the crown at the Southeast Polk Invitational Tuesday at Copper Creek.
Ottumwa finished first with an overall score of 301; seven strokes better than Ankeny, who took second. Walker claimed the top individual score of the invite with a 68.
“I just knew it was going to be a tough day on a tough course,” Walker said. “I got that eagle on the first hole and I let that carry me the rest of the way. I had a feeling if I could get a lot of pars, I’d be up there at the end of the day.”
Joe Wetrich carded a 68 and finished fourth and Braxton Coble claimed ninth with a 77. Dillon Patritto shot an 81, Jacob Gardner finished with an 85 and Hoyt Grooms shot an 86.
Coach Scott Maas said one of the great things about the tourney was playing against teams from the eastern part of the state.
“This was probably the strongest tournament field we’ve faced, so we feel really good about coming out on top,” Maas said.
“We’ve been playing really well lately. It’s a good time of year to be on this kind of roll,” Walker said.
The Bulldogs play a dual at Des Moines Roosevelt Thursday.
