WICHITA, Kan. —
Entering Tuesday, the top-ranked Indian Hills golf team had ideas of extending its winning streak to six straight tournament titles with a final round comeback.
Both the high winds and a pair of four-year programs from Kansas had other plans for the two-time defending NJCAA Division I national champs.
Wichita State not only held on to its five-shot lead over the Warriors on Tuesday, but extended it with the round of a tough final day at the Shocker’s home invitational. While Wichita State took home the team title with a 284 final round and a 834 three-round total, Kansas State also leaped past IHCC for second place, as the Wildcats’ 293 final round was good enough for a three-round 850, six shots ahead of Indian Hills after a final-round 301.
The end of the winning streak for the Warriors brought both positives and negatives for head coach Mike Hagen.
“Our finish in the tournament is one I feel really good about,” Hagen said. “To finish third in our first event is great. It just would have been nice to keep pace with Wichita State and hold off Kansas State, but those teams put up very good scores and we didn’t play the way we should to compete with them, but it’s a good result for our first event of the fall.”
The biggest positive of the entire tournament for the Warriors may have been the immediate emergence of freshman Connor Peck. The Ankeny native showed no fear of the intercollegiate game on Monday with an opening-round 64 and finished as the Warriors top scorer with a three-round two-under 211 total.
“I was really happy to see Connor play that well right off the bat,” Peck said. “That 64 was the round of the tournament and he put the best score up for us this weekend.”
Indian Hills returns home in more ways then one. Besides returning to campus to continue preparing for the remainder of the fall season, IHCC will also play host next Monday and Tuesday to the three-round Community 1st Credit Union Invitational at the Ottumwa Country Club.
“I put this (Shocker Invitational) tournament on our schedule because I knew it would test us right away,” Hagen said. “We played really good golf in two of the three rounds. We have a lot to build on. We have to go back and get better, but this was definitely a good start.”
