DES MOINES —
The first road trip of the season doubled as the toughest road test in the CIML Metro Conference for the Ottumwa girls swim team. Away from The Beach for the first time this season, the Bulldogs fell to reigning Metro champ Des Moines Roosevelt as the Roughriders won every event on the way to a 139-31 win on Tuesday night.
While keeping up with Roosevelt figures to be tough for any team this year, Ottumwa head coach Stephanie Carroll saw her team show more early-season improvement in their fourth meet of the year.
“This was a great opportunity for some individuals to try new races,” Carroll said. “Roosevelt is always a fast pool with great competition. We saw some of our best times of season being put up.”
Marissa Rupalo had the highest finish of the night for the Bulldogs, finishing in third place in the 50 freestyle in a time of 28.03 seconds. Rupalo also scored the most points of any Ottumwa swimmer by adding a fourth-place finish in 1:04.42 in the 100 freestyle to bring home five points individually.
Ottumwa (1-3, 0-1) is back on the road for their first weekend tournament swim of the season. The Bulldogs join a field that includes Fairfield to compete in the host city of the state tournament at Marshalltown High School’s Bobcat Invitational on Saturday.
