AREA CROSS COUNTRY ACTION: DC and Albia tops at Lake Fisher

BLOOMFIELD — The Davis Country girls cross country team boasted the top three finishers at the squad’s home Lake Fisher Invitational Thursday in Bloomfield and Albia took first place on the boys side.

The Mustang girls finished first with a score of 25 and the Blue Demon boys won by a convincing 18 points with a score of 41.

The Mustangs’ Ally McClure finished atop the pack in the girls’ meet with a time of 16:07. Following her were teammates Chandra Smith in second (16:07) and Addie McKee (16:47) in third. The Mustangs ended up accounting for half of the runners in the top 10.

“To have a total of five girls in the top 10 runners is definitely a stride in the right direction,” Davis County coach Josh Husted said.

McClure has now finished first in two out the three meets she has competed in this season.

Albia claimed second in the girls’ meet with 37 and Centerville finished a distant third with 81. Van Buren finished fourth with 97.

Centerville’s Cassidy Schacher finished fourth overall in the girls’ meet with 16:52 and Albia’s Kim Teno claimed fifth with 17:05. Unity Daugherty was Van Buren’s speediest runner; she finished sixth with 17:20.

On the boys’ side, the Blue Demons first place finish was bolstered by Colton Dorpinghaus’s second place finish (17:42) and J.D. Anderson’s third place finish (18:29). It also didn’t hurt that the Blue Demons had four runners finish in the top 10. Yet, coach Todd Ratliff was just as pleased with his fifth best runner; Tyler Beary, who finished 19th.

“Our fifth runner, Tyler Beary, had what I consider the race of his sophomore career,” Ratliff said. “It was a big step for him and the team tonight.”

The Albia boys have already taken first in three meets this season.

“With that we see that there is a lot of hard work still in front of us if we want to keep the rest of the conference teams at bay,” Ratliff said.

Payton Busch of Centerville took first overall in the boys race with 17:16. Davis County took second in the boys meet with 59. The Mustangs’ highest finisher was freshman Zach Hougland, who claimed fifth with a time of 18:41.

“A fifth-place finish is pretty impressive for a freshman,” Husted said.

Clayton Roberts finished eighth overall for Davis County in a time of 19:05.

The bellwether runner for the Van Buren boys was Seth Dickenson who finished sixth with 18:45.

FREMONT — The Pekin girls swept the top four spots of the Lake Keomah Invitational while the Albia boys got four of the top-five places as both squads picked up team titles on Tuesday night. The Panther girls, fifth ranked in Class 1A, beat the Lady Dees by 30 with 21 points while the Blue Demons bested South Central Conference rival Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with 23 points to the Rockets’ 48-point total.

Colton Dorpinghaus beat out EBF’s Christopher Welch to bring home the boys individual title for Albia in a time of 16:44. Welch finished 88 seconds behind Dorpinghaus but 18 seconds ahead of Albia’s J.D. Anderson, who led a 3-4-5 finish for the Blue Demons with Tyler Pasat and Aaron Ambros all finishing within eight seconds of each other.

“I’m extremely pleased with Colton’s offseason workouts and how well he is doing to start the season,” Albia head cross-country coach Todd Ratliff said. “As a team, they guys worked together throughout the meet and finished strong. That will continue to help us throughout the season.”

Welch was joined by sixth-place Hunter Wilz (18:51) and ninth-place Jack Hastings (19:19) as top-ten finishers for the Rockets. The Pekin boys scored a third-place finish as a team with 99 points highlighted by a 10th-place run from Chase Earnest in a time of 19:21.

D.C. girls, Fairfield boys join hosts as runner-ups at Van Buren Invite

KEOSAUQUA — Several teams showed up to compete for the Van Buren cross-country invitational titles on Tuesday. In the end, two teams stood above the rest as Fort Madison and Mediapolis swept the boys and girls team titles in Class ‘AA’ and ‘A’ respectively.

Second place trophies found their way into the hands of three area teams. Van Buren finished runner-up in both Class ‘A’ races while the Davis County girls and Fairfield boys took home second in the ‘AA’ standings.

The girls ‘AA’ race featured a winning run from Fairfield’s Jessica Lamb, who beat out Davis County’s Ally McClure by 10 seconds with time of 15:40. The Trojan girls finished third as a team with 50 points, just five behind the Mustangs and only 17 back of Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison.

McClure was joined in the top five by teammate Chandra Smith, who finished fourth in a time of 16:29. Addie McKee also finished in the top-ten with a sixth-place run of 16:40.

“There’s always room for improvement in every meet,” head coach Josh Husted said of the Mustang girls. “We need to get a little closer in our cluster between our third and fourth girls. I think we’ll be able to accomplish that goal by the end of the season.”

The Mustang boys finished third place, just eight points behind Fairfield, with 75 points. Zach Houghland finished eighth in a time of 18:47 for the Mustangs while Clay Roberts finished 10th in 19:07.

“The boys are doing an awesome job,” Husted said. “Fort Madison’s one of the best teams in the state and to be competitive with a top 3A team like Fairfield is showing something early on this year. We’ll continue to get better with every meet.”

Randy Alderman led the Trojan boys with a fifth-place finish in a time of 17:58. The Trojan girls also got top-ten runs from ninth-place Taylor Ferrel (17:04) and 10th-place Hannah Sobaski (17:09).

The Van Buren girls finished just 17 points behind Mediapolis in the Class ‘A’ standings. Unity Daugherty led the Warriors with a third-place finish in a time of 17:20 while Sydney Atwood took ninth in 19:20.

The Warriors boys scored 66 points to earn their second-place trophy. Seth Dickinson and Thomas Fitzsimmons led Van Buren with top-ten runs as Dickinson finished seventh just ahead of eighth-place Fitzsimmons with each being credited with times of 18:58.

Cardinal finished third as a team in the girls race with 94 points. Lindsay Albert led the Comets, finishing sixth in a time of 18:29. The Cardinal boys were led by Levi Rupe’s 28th-place run of 22:35.

Several area teams will be headed to a pair of local cross-country meets on Thursday. Davis County will host one of those meets, the Lake Fisher Invitational in Bloomfield, while Fairfield will host the other at Waterworks Park.
