Chamber director resigns

McNitt taking on new role in radio

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa Area Chamber of Commerce will lose its director next month.

Terry McNitt announced to the chamber board this week that his last day as executive director will be April 1.

McNitt has served as the executive director for the past five years but has been involved in other capacities with the organization for the last 12 years.

He will take on a new role as advertising manager for KMGO 98.7 and KEDB 105.3.

“It came up in January but I was holding off because I wanted to do the Home Show and get some other things done,” he said. “I’ll still be in the community, still working with businesses. I’ve enjoyed it; I was just really intrigued about a new opportunity. It was time for a change.”

McNitt noted that his departure was not prompted by any controversy or drama.

“I’m not mad at anybody, I’m not upset at anything, I just have an opportunity and I’m going to take it while it’s here,” he said. “It’s a good time for me to go. Now is kind of a lull for the chamber.”

He will be involved in helping the chamber’s board interview and select a new director.

The new director must be familiar working with a nonprofit, understand fundraising, be able to build relationships within the community, work closely with the board of directors, prepare budgets, work with committees and plan events.

“I’m very proud of what I’ve done,” he said. “I got the membership up, revenue up. We have an outstanding board of directors who are going to be fine. They have been so upbeat and wonderful to work with.

He said his resignation was “friendly and peaceful.”

“There was no yelling, avoiding anybody,” he said. “We had the best Home Show we’ve ever had, so it was a good time for me to roll.”
