OTTUMWA —
An Ottumwa teenager has been charged in a stabbing that occurred shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day.
Duane Daniel Heifort, 16, was charged on a warrant for willful injury, a Class C felony, after he was released from the Mercy Franklin Center in Des Moines on Friday.
“He is being charged as an adult because it’s a forcible felony,” said Ottumwa Investigator Steve Harris.
The charge stems from the report of a stabbing in the 500 block of Kruger Street at approximately 1:25 a.m. Tuesday.
Heifort was also charged with persons under the legal age on Tuesday and was then taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The victim from the stabbing has since been released from the hospital, Harris said.
Heifort is being held on $10,000 cash-only bond in Wapello County Jail. He pleaded not guilty and his preliminary hearing, and bond review will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 11
Last April, Heifort was charged with assault causing bodily injury.
