OTTUMWA —
After a couple shots, a treat and some hugs and kisses, Ottumwa’s canine community left the Elks Lodge a happy bunch.
The first-ever community vaccination clinic for dogs was held Saturday afternoon at the Elks Lodge, organized by Hogs4Dogs USA, Thomas Vet Clinic, TOM-FM and the Elks.
“Being involved with Hogs4Dogs, I had a conversation with an acquaintance who had attended one in Fairfield,” said Tammie Hartley, of Hogs4Dogs USA. “We’d never had one but we knew it was needed in the community.”
Each dog had the opportunity to get two shots (rabies and distemper/parvo), micro-chipping, city dog licenses and some grooming and glamour shots.
Owners received a discounted rate on the vaccines and micro-chipping, paying only $15 for each vaccine and $25 for micro-chipping. A city dog license for those living in Ottumwa city limits costs $7.
Micro-chipping hurts slightly more than a vaccination since the chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is inserted between the dog’s shoulder blades, Hartley said.
“But it’s for identification,” she said. “That way if they’re lost or run away, this can help locate them.”
Cassie and Patty Johnson brought 2-year-old Hunter Johnson and their dog, Keytah, to the clinic on Saturday.
They said the clinic was a great opportunity to make sure their dog is vaccinated and safe.
“[Animal Control] Officer [Jeff] Williams is on the scanner, it seems like 20 times a day,” Patty said. “And dogs that are loose or have run away are always being taken to the shelter.”
