HEDRICK —
Ronald Dean Plate, 63, of Hedrick, died Feb. 22, 2013, at his home.
He was born Saturday, Aug. 13, 1949, in Oskaloosa, the son of Paul and Velda Visser Plate. On April 11, 1970, Ron was united in marriage to Marie Reese at Fremont Baptist Church in Fremont.
He graduated from the Fremont High School with the class of 1967. Following graduation, he attended Indian Hills Community College for training as an automotive mechanic. Ron worked as an auto mechanic at Century Motors in Sigourney and later at Duea Chevrolet in Albia for three years until he began farming with his dad. In 1975, Ron bought his own farm near the airport in Ottumwa and farmed it until 1988. During that time he also worked at General Truck Lease for a couple of years. He later drove semi over the road for FP Corp. in Omaha, Neb. Ron later worked at Crouse Cartage Company and lastly at Dickey Transport in Packwood for 25 years. Ron enjoyed reading, westerns, classic rock music, NASCAR, collecting Dale Earnhardt memorabilia and farming on Facebook.
Ron is survived by his wife, Marie Plate of Hedrick; three sons, Tim (Michelle) Plate of University Park, Scott (Saskija) Plate of Ottumwa and Jeremy (Tawny) Plate of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Deanna (Troy) Bemis of Oskaloosa; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-granddaughter; a brother, Keith (Carol) Plate of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister and her husband, Evelyn (Gene) Severson.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Fremont Funeral Chapel; with Rev. Carla Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday in the Fremont Funeral Chapel, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Ronald Plate Memorial Fund.
