Rev. Eva Loraine Reck, 97, died at 9:55 a.m. November 18, 2012 at The Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa.
She was born to Lawrence and Nellie Short in Keokuk County on October 10, 1915. She graduated from Fremont High School. She married John Reck Jr. on October 16, 1933. He preceded her in death October 30, 1982.
Eva worked in the restaurant business, owned a restaurant in Eddyville then began Eva’s Pies and Noodles at Route #4 in 1957. They attended the First Church of the Open Bible where they began full-time gospel group, The Sonshine Home Missions Group, ministering to the Wapello County Home, high rises and to Ottumwa and other surrounding nursing homes. Their ministry lasted over sixty years and continues to this day by other volunteers. They received numerous certificates of recognition for their volunteer work.
John and Eva later attended Faith Chapel where Eva was President of The Women’s World Fellowship. They also ministered at Sherman Chapel for three years. After John’s passing, Eva began full time evangelism and volunteer work. Eva was ordained in 1975 from The Associated Missionaries. She sat on the Board for the Wapello County Home, was a member and gave devotions for The Lord’s Cupboard, RSVP and YWCA. Eva found her home and church family at The Way of Peace Ministries where she was their pianist and substituted for Pastor Lu Ellen Worth.
She is survived by her seven children and their spouses; Shirley (Bob) Shaw, Jerold (Karen) Reck, Ed (Pat) Reck, Judy (Jerry) Purdin, Don (Carolyn) Reck, Kathy (Alex) Macy, and Karen (Bob) Robison; 28 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; 31 great-great grandchildren; three great-great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; a granddaughter; nieces, nephews, cousins, and Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Lu Ellen Worth, Rev. Brian Gentz, and Rev. Melvin Mattox officiating. Burial will be in Abel Cemetery near Fremont.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Way of Peace Ministries or Endowment for the Chaplaincy at The Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa.
