Harry Baker, 65, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Harold “Harry” I. Baker, 65, of Knoxville, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 10:20 a.m. February 3, 2013 at the Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa.

He was born September 21, 1947 in Grand Rapids, MI to Edward and Alice Dykhouse Baker. He married Martha Kay Davis on March 15, 1969.

Harry was a Vietnam veteran having served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He had been a resident of Knoxville since 1987, where he had worked as a federal police officer at the VA in Knoxville.

He earned a degree in Criminology from Indian Hills Community College. He attended Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI, Parsons College in Fairfield and William Penn University in Oskaloosa. Harry was a member of AmVET, ABATE of Iowa, Disabled American Veterans, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Newaygo, MI. He was a veteran’s rights advocate, and he loved camping and was active in black powder rendezvous.

Surviving is his wife, Kay; a son, Harold “Ike” (Karla) Baker Jr. of Knoxville; two daughters, Amiee (Curt) Cupples and Amanda Kay (Will) Ryerson both of Knoxville; three grandchildren, Conner, Casey and Collin; two brothers, Edward (Jan) Baker of Michigan and Barthel (Virginia) Baker of Florida; a sister, Betty Jean (Edward) Weckwert of Cobb, GA; and his wife’s family, the Amy Davis family of the Ottumwa and Floris areas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Barthel Baker Jr.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with AMVET Chaplain Don Zoutte Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Floris Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
