OTTUMWA —
Leo Donald Gail, 88, of 808 Filmore, died at 4:30 p.m. January 29, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born June 4, 1924 in Ottumwa to Oscar Burr and Cora Eva Owens Gail. He married Thelma Wilkins on January 14, 1946. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1993. He married Leolive Smithart on October 18, 1993.
Leo was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked for 25 years at John Morrell & Co., for 7 years at Winger’s and he owned and operated Gail’s Service.
He was a member of First Pentecostal Assembly of God and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving is his wife, Leolive; a son, James Gail of Ottumwa; a step-daughter, Joy Songer of Ottumwa; a step-son, Greg Smithart of Mediapolis; a granddaughter, Shelly of Missouri; a step-granddaughter, Andrea Songer of Ottumwa; three great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Brenna and Justin; a sister-in-law, Anita Truitt.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Leo Gail; two sisters, Marie Bainbridge and Lucille Randall; four brothers, Clarence, Paul, Lawrence and George Gail.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Pentecostal Assembly of God with Rev. Richard Schlotter officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be made to First Pentecostal Assembly of God or The Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa.
