Roger E. Batterson, 69, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Roger Elvin Batterson, 69, of Ottumwa, passed away suddenly January 22, 2013 at his home.

He was born March 28, 1943 in Bladensburg in the home of his parents, Walter and Olive Brooks Batterson. He married Nancy Stegemann on June 18, 1966. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2006.

Roger grew up on the family farm, and after morning chores, drove the school bus as a Junior and Senior while attending Fremont High School. He was active in baseball, track and basketball, graduating from Fremont High School in 1961. His career record of over 1,500 points scored in basketball still stands. He was named to the All State team by the Des Moines Register. Roger was offered, but declined a basketball scholarship.

He served with the Iowa Army National Guard as a platoon sergeant with Company B 244th Engineer Battalion.

He worked at Sutherlands and Wormhoudts prior to studying Architecture at Iowa State University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1973.  After graduation from ISU, he and Nancy embarked on an 8,000 mile road trip of Mexico. He enjoyed traveling, enjoying the journey as much as the destination. Upon returning, he joined Hannig Associates of Terre Haute, IN where he designed buildings. In 1982, they moved back home to Ottumwa and he established REB Construction where he designed and built until his retirement in 2008.

He was a lifetime member of B.P.O Elks Lodge #347, a longtime member of Ottumwa Rotary and Wapello County Historical Society. He served in leadership positions in various service and professional organizations.

He enjoyed time fishing, golfing and with pool leagues, making pies, mowing grass and tending his garden. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his three children, Dr. Gina (Dr. Brian) Moran of Dubuque, David (Dr. Kim) Batterson of Colorado Springs, CO and Sarah Batterson of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaitlin and Gabrielle Moran, Abigail and Jack Batterson; a special friend, Diana Wallerich of Moulton; his siblings, Judy Skinner of Moore, OK, Gary (Barb) Batterson of Monroe, Vicky (John) Wyngarden of Fremont, Mary (Gary) Dixon of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers and an infant sister.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father Bernie Weir presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Roger’s name to the Elks Scholarship Fund in Ottumwa.
