MORAVIA —
Doris Johnson, 87, of Moravia, passed away Nov. 5, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
She was born Sept. 19, 1925, in the Mantua Township of Monroe County to Howard and Lora Marie (DeLong) Besco. Doris married Kenneth Johnson on Aug. 30, 1944, in rural Albia. He preceded her in death in 1999.
After graduating from high school in 1943, Doris received one year of training in college to become a certified teacher. She taught for several years. Doris and Kenneth lived on a farm in Monroe County, where they raised their family. While residing on the family farm, Doris also raised dogs. She was extremely proud of the work she put into her professional kennel. After selling the farm, Doris moved to Moravia.
Doris was very active in the community in her free time. She was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia. She also enjoyed numerous hobbies, including playing cards and reading.
She is survived by her children, Maxine Rodish of Johnston, Ruth (Don) Stover of Des Moines, Carol McDanel of Coralville and Shirley (Dan) Thoreson of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Andrew Rodish of Winterset, Scott Peterson and Tracy (Andy) Raisch, both of Alden, Chad (Deanna) McDanel and Shawn (Jennifer) McDanel, both of Coralville, Joe (Nicole) Thoreson of Peoria, Ill., Carl (Amber) Thoreson of Medina, Tenn., and Nick Thoreson of Cincinnati, Ohio; and nine great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a sister, Lora Mae Buchholz.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lange Funeral Home in Moravia; with Pastor Cindy Finn officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established to Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia and may be left at or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home, 103 N. John St., Moravia, Iowa, 52544.
