Fred Propp, 85, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Fred Donovan Vincent Propp, 85, of #1 Oakridge Rd. Apt #208 died November 2, 2012, at Ottumwa Regional Medical Center.  He was born April 4, 1927, in Parshall, North Dakota and lived in North Dakota throughout his childhood.  He worked for many summers on his Uncle Lloyd Nelson’s farm near Kenmare where he met Lila Mickelsen, whom he married November 24, 1948, after serving in the Army Air Corp.

Fred and Lila moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where Fred earned his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree at the South Dakota School of Mines.  Upon his graduation, they moved to East Moline, Illinois, where Fred began his 30 year career with John Deere.  He was employed in the Engineering Department at Deere and Company in Moline for 18 years after which he was transferred to John Deere Ottumwa Works and served as Manager of Mechanical Services and Plant Engineering for 12 years.  Fred retired in 1982.

Fred served others for many years as Boy Scout and Cub Scout Master and on the church councils where they lived.  He was a Kiwanian.  He enjoyed hunting, especially with his family, gardening, baking bread, upholstery, camping and wood carving.  He organized the Wapello County Woodcarvers.  Fred was also devoted to his family and was loved in return as husband, father of six, grandfather of 14 and great grandfather of 19.  Fred was a life-long jokester, who loved to laugh, and loved life.

Fred is survived by his wife of 63+ years, Lila, and his six children Alicia (Jim) Miller, Carmen (Ron) Ladd, Steven (Diana) Propp, Candace Propp (Dawn Anderson), Todd (Jean) Propp and Alan (Amy) Propp, and grandchildren Tammy, Derek, Ben Miller, Lynzee, Heather, Brandon Ladd, Angela, Theresa, Brian Propp, Justin, Devin, Connor Propp, Cameron and Makayla Propp; a brother, Douglas (Linda) Propp and a sister, Donna Sundby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy and Oranda and a brother, Robert.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Ralph Kister officiating.  Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Visitation will begin 10 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home, 607 E. Second St., Ottumwa, IA 52501, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.  Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Lutheran Church, Ottumwa.
