Daniel James Boender, 54, Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Dan Boender, 54, of Oskaloosa, died Feb. 15, 2013, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

He was born Jan. 2, 1959, just shortly after his twin sister Donna Jean, at the old Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa. Harry and Elizabeth Ann Rus Boender were honored that their twins were the New Year’s babies in 1959. The twins were welcomed to this world by their older brother Steve; they were joined later by Doug, Bill and Beth Ann. When Dan was 2 days old, he choked and aspirated. He then suffered with hyaline membrane causing permanent brain damage.

Dan was loved and cared for at home until the age of 8. He was blessed to get educational training at Hope Haven in Rock Valley. He received spiritual training from Jim and Frieda Van Der Sluis and their girls, Darla and Dorinda; they were Dan’s foster family in Rock Valley and had a wonderful positive impact on his life. After three years in Rock Valley, Dan received further training at C.O.C. in Pella. In 1989, Dan moved home and attended the C.O.C. workshop in Oskaloosa.  Later, Dan moved to the Imagine the Possibilities “Burlington Home,” where he lived for nearly 12 years.  He spent his final months at Progressive Industries North in Newton.

Dan was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa and enjoyed being involved in Friendship Ministries at the church. He loved to pray and sing. Dan was a multi-year participant in the Special Olympics. Dan looked forward to fall harvest; he enjoyed riding in the combine and semi. He also enjoyed animals and always looked forward to a meal.  The Boender family has been blessed to have Dan touch not only their lives but the lives of those around him as well. As a final gift of generosity Dan was a tissue donor.

His family includes his parents, Harry and Elizabeth Ann Boender of Oskaloosa; brothers and sisters, Steve (Jan) Boender of rural Oskaloosa, Dan’s twin sister, Donna (Roger) Prins of Loveland, Colo., Doug (Ginger) Boender of rural New Sharon, Bill (Julie) Boender of rural New Sharon and Beth (Dan) Trumble of Malawi, Africa; 35 nephews and nieces; 15 great-nephews and nieces; aunts and uncles; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Revs. Dale Visser and Brian Ochsner officiating. There will be a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service in the basement of the church today. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.

Visitation was held Sunday in the Bates Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christian Opportunity Center or Progress Industries of Newton.
