DELTA —
Clayton Huff Crill, 89, died Feb. 16, 2013, at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
He was born April 7, 1923, the son of Howard Clayton and Fennella Fear Crill on the family farm west and north of the rural Keokuk County town of Springfield. He and his older sister, Annetta, walked and rode horses to attend the area country school know as Burr Oak (Washington #1) and then on to What Cheer to attend high school, graduating in 1940. He worked on the family farm and neighboring farms.
On Oct. 8, 1944, he was joined in marriage to the “neighbor girl” and the love of his life, Christine Jane Root at the Delta Christian Church. To this union, three children were born, C. John, Sherry and Mary.
Clayton served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Asian Theater. He raised draft horses and was inducted into the Draft Horse Hall of Fame in 1993 at the Iowa State Fair. He was a member of the Draft Horse Association and the Quarter Association. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with many friends.
He is survived by his son C. John (Marilyn) Crill of Rose Hill; two daughters, Sherry (Layton) Claypool of Delta and Mary (Gary) McMuillen of Delta; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by her parents; wife Christine on Oct. 5, 2012; and his sister, Annetta Charbonneau.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today Garrett Cemetery.
No visitation is planned.
A memorial fund has been established.
Holm Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
