OTTUMWA —
Harley Merl McDowell, 94, formerly of 545 Bryan Rd., died March 18, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born July 25, 1918 north of Batavia, IA to John and Eva Bradshaw McDowell. He married Lois Brown on June 29, 1939.
Harley was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army 105th Field Artillery. He worked for 30 years at John Morrell & Co., retiring in 1972.
Harley was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion for 69 years, and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114.
Surviving is his wife, Lois; three sons, Dean (Elizabeth) McDowell of Ottumwa, Harley Paul McDowell of White Pidgeon, MI, Scott (Jo) McDowell of Agency; two daughters, Sandra (Jim) Elliott and Patty (Denny) Bradley both of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald (Patty) McDowell of Munterville.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jim, Harold, Eddie and Eugene McDowell; two sisters, Grace Parker and Ethel Smith.
Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Batavia Cemetery with Bill Payne officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to the O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion Firing Squad.
