ALBIA —
Nellie May Johnston, 93, of Albia, died Oct. 17, 2012, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia under the care of Monroe County Hospice.
She was born in Lucas County on Feb. 19, 1919 to John R. and Anna Davis May.
She was a rural school teacher for seven years. She then was a cook at the Bluebird Café, Wapello County Home and Leisure Lounge. She attended the First Baptist Church in Albia, and then later she became a member of the First Christian Church in Albia. She was a member of the Women’s Quilting Guild of the First Christian Church. She was an animal lover, and she enjoyed quilting. She donated many quilts to the Marion County Humane Society for 19 years and the Lucas County Humane Society. She also donated toys, quilts and clothes to the Native American Reservations. Nellie made over 400 quilts after her retirement.
She is survived by one son, Dennis (Vicki) Johnston of Ottumwa; two grandchildren, Eric (Jenny) Johnston of Ottumwa and Melanie (Gary) Collett of Blakesburg; four great-grandchildren, Logan and Sydney Collett, and Griffin and Ryder Johnston; and one niece, Norma Vandekamp of Evans, Ga.
She is preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Olive Lukehart, Edna Blubaugh and Mary Weiland; and one brother, Robert May.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia; with Rev. Lynda Carlson and Pastor Andrew Estes officiating. Nellie’s Body will be cremated after Services. There will be a funeral luncheon at the First Baptist Church in Albia following services.
Visitation will open to the public 2 p.m. today at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia with the family present from 6-8 p.m. this evening.
Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Lucas County or the Marion County Humane Society.
