ALBIA —
Albert Paul Tangie, 78, of Albia, passed away Feb. 24, 2013, at his residence in rural Albia after an 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Albert was born on Oct. 28, 1934, in Monroe County to John and Mary (Teno) Tangie, and he was a first-generation American. On Oct. 6, 1963, Albert married Joyce Schillerstrom at the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield. To this union, two children were born, Kevin and Carol. They raised their children on the farm where they ran a beef cow and calf operation and grew corn, soybeans and hay.
He attended and graduated from Albia High School, Class of 1952. He was very active in 4-H and Farm Bureau Rural Youth and was Monroe County Contour Flowing champion for two years. After school, Albert served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed in West Berlin, Germany.
Albert was employed by John Morrells in Ottumwa for 18 years. Farming was always his hobby, but in 1967 when Morrells closed, he bought a farm in Monroe County and started farming on his own. Albert was a Farm Bureau member since 1957 and through the years was a very active member, serving as president, vice president, secretary, voting delegate and membership chairman.
Albert is survived by his wife, Joyce Tangie of Albia; a daughter, Carol Tangie (Matthew) Arnold of Dallas, Texas; a son, Kevin (Tonya) Tangie of Avery; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; Albert is also survived by two brothers, Robert (Margaret) Tangie of rural Albia and James Tangie of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Tangie.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Albia; with Rev. Bob Elgin officiating. Albert’s body has been cremated, and a burial will be in Munterville Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Albert’s family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or to the scholarship fund for the Monroe County Farm Bureau.
