Nadine Sowden, 84, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Nellie Nadine Sowden, 84, of 420 Burrhus, died at 1:36 a.m. January 26, 2012 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

She was born April 11, 1927 in Oskaloosa to Fred and Nellie Padgett Grandia. She married William H. Sowden on July 31, 1945 in Green River, WY.  He preceded her in death on July 19, 1978.

A 1945 graduate of Ottumwa High School, she moved to Wyoming in 1945, returning to Ottumwa in 1965. She worked in dietary for 22 years at Ottumwa Hospital, retiring in 1988.

Nadine was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation and Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are five sons, Bill (Linda) Sowden of Ottumwa, Bob Sowden of Rock Springs, WY, Jay (Sue) Sowden and Paul (Melissa) Sowden all of Des Moines, Ron (Vickie) Sowden of Pleasant Hill; three daughters, Mary (Rick) Vaught of Indianola, Patty Aalbers of Ottumwa and Melody Wiedmann (Jerry Salvator) of Pontiac, IL; 24 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Twylia (Don) Tucker of Copalis Crossing, WA; and others she considered family, Greg Aalbers, Lorna Sowden, Bill Wiedmann, Judy Stevens and Icela Garcia.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Theresa “Betty” and Larry Nine; a grandson, Brian Housley; and two sisters, JoAnn Hatfield and Margaret Lawson.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home, with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa Hospice, 2035 Chester Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501 or Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501.
